This Food Handling & Safety course is designed to ensure you fully understand the requirements around handling food and safety to ensure health and safety for both customers and workers. It is suitable for job seekers as well as those who already work, own or volunteer in a food related business.

Upon successful completion participants will be issued with a NSW Food Safety Supervisor Certificateas well as a Statement of Attainment in Food Handling & Safety.

The Food Act 2003 (NSW) requires that every food business must have at least one trained Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) designated to implement safe food handling on the premises. The Food Safety Supervisor requirement applies to businesses serving food that is ready-to-eat and potentially hazardous including: attractions, aged care facilities, bakeries, cafes, caterers, clubs, educational catering, events and conference venues, hospitals, hotels, kiosks, mobile food vendors, restaurants, retail food outlets, residential catering, takeaway shops, temporary premises (e.g. food market stalls), supermarkets, in-flight and other transport catering.

NSW FSS certificates are valid for five years. To keep your FSS current you must retrain for recertification.

Entry requirements

You will need to have language, literacy and numeracy skills (LLN) that allow you to read and interpret information and complete workplace forms. City East Community College may conduct an LLN assessment as part of the pre enrolment process.

Assessments are made against units of competency from the Food Safety Supervision SITSS00051.
  • Use hygienic practices for food safety (SITXFSA001)
  • Participate in safe food handling practices (SITXFSA002)
